Country Roots sound is a reflection of its name. The multi-part harmonies, the
blend of acoustic and electric, the country and folk impressions of a fiddle and
mandolin, tied with clean percussion all bring together a comfortable mix of classic
country, folk, and popular country rock. The band is composed of six experienced
musicians.
Wayne "Wildcard" Miller initially pulled the band members together and put direction
into the core sound. Wayne's strong lead vocals and years of stage experience was a
driving force in building the foundation of the band. Wayne charted the band's
course by selecting the majority of its first song selections. From that initial
inspiration, the band has added four hours of songs that all stay true to the
original Country Roots theme.
The second member of the band is Mark Loos. His strong breathy vocals and electric
and acoustic skills balanced well with Wayne's higher octave voice. Together Mark
and Wayne share the majority of the lead singing. Mark's band experiences date back
into the early seventies where he played hard acoustic rock venue. He brings a
blending of soft acoustic picking to the ballads and hard crisp electric leads to
the "dance" music that Country Roots offers its audience.
Wayne's next addition was a musician who plays several instruments. For Country
Roots he is primarily a bass player, but can easily move to a six string acoustic
guitar or electric. Dennis Roger Reed comes to Country Roots with his own following.
Having cut several albums for a number of bands, Dennis also has his own band: The
Dennis Roger Reed Band that has a strong following in Southern California. Dennis
has been playing in this town for twenty years. Along with his instrument skills
Dennis sings several lead songs for the Country Roots. His earthy voice and expert
ear for harmonies completes the Country Roots multi-part harmony with Wayne and
Mark.
Shelah Spiegel joined as the fourth member. Shelah is a four time winner of the
"State Fiddle Champion of California" award. She has won the event so many times
they asked her to judge so as to leave room for others on the podium. Shelah can
whip a song into a knee slapping frenzy or lay down a soothing melody behind all the
acoustic string picking notes. Shelah also adds a female harmony in backup vocals.
The fifth edition - Don Segien, a mandolin virtuoso. Don's rhythmic style in
strumming and phenomenal lead breaks keep the folksy sound in the Country Roots
alive. Don also provides back up singing completing a five voice harmony. The
fullness of three guitars a fiddle and mandolin and five voices is unique from most
country bands of today.
The final member of the band is Ray Genovese. Ray is a professional drummer and has
several bands he works with. Wayne and Ray attend the same church where Ray is also
the church's drummer. The Country Roots sound is broadened with Ray's percussion
talents. He is the backbone, along with Dennis's bass, in driving the music, but his
technique adds many subtle rhythms and styles. Ray truly completes the band sound
by accentuating the changes in the melody while producing a tempo that keeps the
audience's toes tapping.
In summary, the Country Roots Band brings Southern California a refreshing new sound
that folds the classic country songs with the great folks songs and a solid country
rock back beat that continues to attract new fans to their following.
